Go Figure

This graphite drawing on newsprint will be in the "Go Figure" show sponsored by the Santa Cruz Art League in Santa Cruz, California. It's very satisfying drawing the female figure knowing that the subject has been drawn and painted ever since man picked up a stick and started drawing, and is probably the most popular subject matter for artists of all time.

Southern Appalachian Juried Show

I'm happy to have my painting titled "Deerwood's Farm" in the Southern Appalachian Artist Guild's 2010 National Juried Show. The show runs from October 16 - November 12, and is in the Art Center Gallery in the old courthouse in downtown Blue Ridge, Georgia. I saw the show last year and thought there was some really outstanding work represented.

Metro Montage X

This mixed-media piece will be in the Metro Montage X show at the Marietta-Cobb Museum of Art. A bit of experimenting here with oil painting, photography, pastel and colored pencil. Quite a mix.

Eye of the Beholder

I did this painting for no particular reason other than having a little fun with painting on a different surface - a corrugated box top. The apples were painted/drawn on the indentations of tuna cans. Then I saw a juried competition "Eye of the Beholder: The Art of the Found Object," and entered the painting. I was pleased to see it was accepted and also to see that the sponsor, the Maryland Federation of Art, used it on their promotional pieces announcing the show. Another lesson in the fact that art can be done on "anything." And also that art is indeed "in the eye of the beholder."

Painting of me painting

I participated in a plein air paint out at the beautiful Smith-Gilbert Gardens in Kennesaw on Thursday and Friday. I really wasn't pleased with my word over those two days. Plein air painting is HARD. (I like to plein air paint but most of my work is done in the studio from photographs I take.) I did however, end up with something I was very pleased with in the end...it's just that I didn't paint it. This is a plein air painting of me painting at the paint out. Anyone who knows me realizes this captures me perfectly. It was painted by Kay Hibbard, a very talented Atlanta area artist. She was kind enough to let me take a photo of it and use it in my promotional materials. It's a great painting and a great example of plein air work.

Palette Knife Show

I was fortunate to have two pieces at the recent palette knife show at The Gallery at Paper Mill. This is a very small piece but I really like it because it is spontaneous. When I feel like I am tightening up with my paintings, I take a small canvas and do something with the palette knife. You don't have much choice but to be spontaneous. Donna Thomas does a great job with the gallery, hosting juried art shows just about every month.

Island Dream at High Country

This is a painting I have at High Country Art and Antiques in Blue Ridge, GA. Blue Ridge is a great little North Georgia mountain town with lots of great shops and restaurants, an old train depot, a cultural arts center and Blue Ridge Lake and the Toccoa River nearby. It's a great day trip or weekend getaway from Atlanta. And High Country is a fantastic gallery with great artists, pottery, jewelry and antiques. The gallery alone is worth the trip.

Inman Park Festival

I had a booth at the Inman Park Festival this past weekend. Saturday was literally a washout, but Sunday was a great day with beautiful weather. I sold three paintings including this one from my "Views from the Road" series. This was painted from a photo I took at the Barrett Parkway exit off I-575 when wildflowers were in bloom. We can sometimes miss something beautiful on our "way to the mall" is we don't keep our eyes open for one of those unexpected little pleasures in life.
